Eco Pond Rescue was born out of the frustration of two home owners
that were lucky enough to live on a small 3 acre lake in Florida. With
37 homes surrounding the 3.3 acre lake (that was turned into a drainage
project in
1982
by county officials) the 100 year old shallow lake started suffering. By
2006 there were several large scale fish kills and dangerous blue green
algae blooms covering the surface.
With an average depth of 5 feet, Florida's blistering
summer sun and the high nutrient load being dumped from over 70 storm
water drains in a 1 square mile area, our lake started to die. The odor
was oppressive and persisted for weeks. Some neighbors even called 911
thinking that a sewage spill occurred.
As a community we started looking into solutions. The most common is
the spraying of chemicals to kill the algae. We have had a contract with
a local company for 7 years to do the spraying and while it made the
lake look better, the regular spraying without a complete maintenance
program actually adds to the problem by sinking the algae to the bottom
where it decomposes, using up oxygen in the water. Unknown to us at the
time, the decomposition of dead algae caused fish kills, odors and murky
water
conditions.
We found that spraying alone does not work! Spraying is a temporary
solution to a permanent recurring problem.
We enlisted with Pinellas County's Adopt A Pond
program, where through regular lake cleanups (removing trash and algae
biomass), plantings of native nitrogen absorbing water plants, educating
ourselves to the problems with fertilizers and lawn spraying companies
as well as making sure extra biomass was not deposited into the lake
from landscaping and lawn services.
We also added three aerators that run 12 hours every 24 hour period,
mostly at night.
Just when we thought we were making headway, another
fish kill and large blue green algae blooms developed. The lake was in
bad shape despite our efforts and still dying. There had to be another
way.
While
each one of the mentioned procedures worked on some level, the key was
finding a way to eliminate the nutrients. We found the solution and
started Eco Pond Rescue in 2007.
The first order of business for Eco Pond Rescue was to
develop an aeration and circulation system that not only worked, but
worked efficiently. Electrical costs, equipment costs and maintenance
affected our decision making process. Through research and partnerships
with a biological laboratory and an engineering firm that specializes in
venturi aeration, we were on our way!
We look forward to the opportunity to earn your
business and we encourage comparison to the other systems on the market
today. We know ours is the best, lowest cost, lowest maintenance, lowest
operating cost systems on the planet and would love to prove it!
