MANY FLORIDA pond owners face problems with nuisance aquatic plants.
One of the more publicized solutions is the triploid grass carp, a fish imported from Asia
and genetically altered at hatcheries so it will not spawn. One of the few fish species that eats aquatic vegetation, grass carp are effective in controlling some species of aquatic plants, particularly in small water bodies. However, this fish is not a magic solution for every pond owner.

The grass carp (or white amur) Ctenopharyngodon idella , is a large (125-centimetre) herbivorous minnow from lowland rivers of Pacific slope drainages of eastern Asia. It superficially resembles the common carp (Cyprinus carpio), but differs in several characteristics. Its body is more streamlined, its mouth is terminal, and it lacks a stiff dorsal spine and barbels. The grass carp has large, grooved pharyngeal {throat} teeth and a long intestine which allow it to effectively shred and digest aquatic plants as its principal food. The grass carp, as a biological control of aquatic plants, is considered an attractive long-term method for control of submersed aquatic plants.

Abundant growth of aquatic plants causes serious problems in ponds, lakes, rivers, and irrigation and drainage throughout Florida. In some situations, native aquatic plants become weeds, but most often exotic plants introduced from areas outside the state flourish under the favorable growing conditions found in Florida. Long-term economical solutions to Florida's aquatic weed problems have been elusive and there is a need for control techniques to alleviate aquatic weed problems.

This bulletin provides information on a biological method, the grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella Val.), for management of some of Florida's aquatic weed problems. Emphasis is placed on use of this fish to control hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata [L.f.] Royle) and other submersed aquatic plants.

Since the grass carp is a living organism - in contrast to either herbicides or mechanical devices used for aquatic weed management a somewhat different approach is required. A knowledge of the life cycles of plants that become weeds and feeding behavior of the fish are important considerations in understanding the various ways in which grass carp can be used to manage plant problems. The grass carp will not be useful for all aquatic plant problems; rather it offers the potential to effectively and economically manage certain of them.

Normally, grass carp require free-flowing river systems to spawn and produce eggs, so it is believed they don't pose much of a threat to lake systems. However, grass carp have been known to escape from stocked lakes or ponds into neighboring waterbodies; this may explain the presence of numerous breeding populations of grass carp in a number of states along the Mississippi River. In Florida, three adult fish, including one gravid female, have been captured in the Suwannee River.

When grass carp are able to produce viable eggs, they are said to be "diploid" - they have the right number of chromosomes. But Florida law says that grass carp used for weed control must be sterile and unable to produce viable eggs. They must be "triploid".
